Solar water heating – a way to cut your energy
bills and reduce carbon emissions. Whilst the best way
to cut carbon usage and save on our energy bills is to insulate
our houses – what can we do next? Well,
in Wenhaston one of the answers was to install solar water heating
which has meant that some of us have spent the summer luxuriating
in hot water showers courtesy of solar power having switched
off the immersion heater for at least several weeks!

How did
this happen?
WESG had carried out a village carbon audit, which recommended
a number of ways to cut carbon. Solar water heating was mentioned
but although government grants are available – it still
seemed quite expensive. So we set about running a tendering exercise
with help from Suffolk Energy Action Link and invited firms to
bid for our village project. The result was that Solarworks won
the contract not only reducing the price (in one instance by
at least £1500) but providing us with a source of help
and advice as part of their after sales service.
So far we have 13 households involved with more expected.
