simple ways to save energy
1. Invest in insulation. Make sure your
house is well-insulated. It's a cheap and effective way to save energy and there are many grants and money-saving offers available now, especially if you live in Wenhaston!
2. Change to
low-energy, long-life bulbs whenever you replace (specially
in areas that need long periods of lighting) – you can
save up to £40 in the lifetime of the bulb.
3. Switch off and save. Don't leave electrical appliances on standby. Ensure you turn everything off at night and save money.
4. Turn down heating and wear more layers.
1 degree can save an astonishing 10% off your annual heating bills.
5. Check your water cylinder
is fully lagged.
6. Watch out for draughts around gaps in doors and windows, keyholes and letter boxes. Draught excluder packs are available in most DIY stores and good draught exclusion can save over £25 a year, so it will soon pay for itself.
7. Consider only heating part of the house if you don't use all the rooms. Invest in a low energy heater.
8. It pays to close all your curtains at dusk in the winter - they keep the heat in and so save on heating bills.
9. Double-glazing is pricey to install but it can save heat loss through windows by 50%, so saving up to £100 a year in bills.
10. Wash at
a cooler cycle - today's washing powders do not need to be used at high temperature and 30 degrees C is fine for most things. You could even think about doing some hand washing ........
11. Fill a
kettle with only the water you need.
12. Save water - turn off
the tap when brushing your teeth, and put a l litre water bottle or Essex & Suffolk
Water Board “Hippo” in your toilet cistern. Use showers not baths, except for a treat..
