Car Share

Many of us wonder how we can cut our use of cars for small journeys – as well as regular job related ones.   Obviously public transport is the ideal , but where a car is needed, what to do?

For regular journeys, Suffolk Car Share may be the way to go.  This aims to link people who regularly use the same route throughout the county. You can encourage friends, family and colleagues to join the sheme and register their journeys.

The Wombat Car Club is a scheme started in Kesgrave, Suffolk in 2007 where you share a car and pay as you drive. "A great alternative to running a car and is designed to save you money whilst keeping the flexibility." Not based yet in our part of Suffolk, but if there is interest, then it could happen.

What about car use around Wenhaston?

For local trips, we may all have to try and be more organised !   As yet we do not have an interactive website, so perhaps the way to go is to individually have a group of  2- 3 people – or more – whom you reckon to contact re shopping trips etc .   This may seem very small, but everything has to start somewhere.

The other idea is to have one or two jointly owned cars, which people use when needed . This is different from lift sharing. There are already one or two people interested in this option in the village, so if anyone would like to pursue, this please contact us.

These are good reasons for looking into this scheme.

  • You only need your car on two evenings each week. At other times you are happy to get the bus!
  • You feel that the ongoing expenses of keeping a car well maintained are heavy in comparison to your weekly usage.
  • And then there’s global warming…!!!!

IS THERE ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT WHEN CAR SHARING?
Whether  you might choose a very small arrangement to share or whether enough are interested to go for a big “fleet”, the important concerns have been well thought-through by an organisation called “Car Plus”. You can check out their website: www.carplus.org.uk

IMost people would just want to be sure that those of us sharing are committed to sharing the responsibilities fairly and in friendship. (And probably a no-smoking in the vehicle policy!)

If you are a responsible person with full driving licence and a careful driver and you’d like to talk about the idea of car sharing please contact:

info@wenhastongreen.org.uk to express your interest.
